Planning to upgrade

Hey guys.

My current pc is getting a bid outdated, and slow . So thinking about buying some new parts (cpu, motherboard, ram, graphics card).
Been looking around a bid, and these are the parts I currently came up with.

- INTEL Core i7-3770K Boxed (CPU)
- ASUS P8Z77-V,s1155 (Motherboard)
- CORSAIR 16GB (2x8GB) Vengeance Black (DDR3 Ram, could do 4x4GB aswell, but thinking towards the futher already, motherboards can handly up to about 32GB)
- ASUS GeForce GTX680 DCII TOP,2GB PCI-e (Graphics card)


This is all just an idea, could be a buy annother cooling fan for the cpu, and might buy annother power supply, but normally the one I got now should do just fine.
Let me know what you think, or what you would change and why.

well i used to be a intel knob so i think i would stick with AMD as i had it for the last upgrades. but that I7 seems really nice .
i think its a good set up

looks alright to me except you didn't say which of the ASUS P8Z77-V motherboards you are looking at... the plain P8Z77-V, the LE, LEPLUS, LX, LK, LX2, Premium, Pro, Pro/Thunderbolt or Deluxe... So many versions

... I think Foggy may have the pro version.

It's the same board I was looking at except none of the lower boards had enough USB sockets for me on the back as I'd want 8 at a minimum. I also cant stand to see those damned old monitor connectors on modern MBs these days. I'd narrowed my choices down to the Deluxe versions or the Sabertooth. Both expensive boards though but the only ones with the stuff I wanted on them. It'll be a good board, but only you can decide what features you want and pick the model to match.

For me, I'm pleased I didn't ask santa for new PC parts other than an SSD. While its nice the extra speed, I don't seem excited by it these days, too old and grumpy.... but you're still young enough to enjoy it

ya i've been looking to the sabertooth aswell, verry nice board. But i'm not sertain, I'm still not 100% sertain of the motherboard. But i'm pretty sertain of the CPU

I think the i7 is much to expensive compared to i5.
And i5 is good enough what hard disk you have.
And why do you put 16 gig memory in.
And yeah get a other cooling fan for cpu you wil get problems when its hot out side

16GB is just to keep me going for a long time . Lets say 2-4GB was more then enough 4-5years ago. Today that is getting a bid close. And these days DDR3 ram modules are pretty cheap, so thinking to the futher and the price why not.

Why the I7 you say bambam. Well check benchmarks m8, indeed an I5 is cheaper, but the preformance of those are in a lot of cases lower aswell. Also been looking to the AMD CPU's, but they just not doing it for me these days, I used to be pro AMD, ok they are cheaper, but compared to intel they don't have much high end left in them. The best i could find I can buy over here is a 8 core (AMD FX-8350) but in benchmarks it doesn't get the preformance of the 4core intel I have picked out. Even the i5-3570K does better in some tests...

If I would take a amd I would have this cpu and motherboard probably.

Annyhow i'm not sertain if I'm going to update my system, more or less putting this all out here to see what you guys think, could possibly be I keep going with my current system some more.

Personally, I would wait a few months until we get details on the new xbox - there are rumours its supposed to be more powerful than current PCs but I find that hard to believe unless they are going to charge 1000€ for it... but it might have some influence on your decision. Also, in 6 months we might be on a new intel socket but I haven't looked in to that.

My view would be, if you need it, get it... if you don't really need it now... wait a bit.

I'm not really a big console guy to be honnoust. Altho I'm always trying to follow what is happening on the console market, and at this point only a lot of rumors

from what i hear the new xbox/ps isnt going to be that far ahead of current pc if it is at all.... since there gonne cost round 500-600 euro new. like black said rumors and u cant believe them

No my point wasnt anything to with whether you like or want an xbox... im the last person to ever be interested in a console, but its consoles these days that drive the games industry. No one makes games for PCs these days unless they dont want to make lots of money. Hence, the power of new consoles will have a direct effect on the quality of the games we will get for PCs.

The reason I mentioned a rumour was because it came from an xbox magazine that was closing down. Apparently they had information which could have got them in to trouble if publishing it while still in business but they saved it until the last ever edition. It included quotes supposidy from microsoft staff about the new xbox and it containing more that 16 cpu cores... think thats what it said.. i didnt really pay much attention to it to be honest (but as they were going they could publish complete crap without worry anyway).

My point is though - in a few months we get to know what the power of the consoles will be after the technology shows. If they are going to be weak, then might aswell upgrade now. If they are going to be uber powerful then you might want to wait 7 or 8 months to upgrade and get whats most powerful then... the Haswel processors are out then and will be on a new socket.

Personally, I think the xbox will be behind what we have for PCs now and so future games will still be limited... but who knows, I hope I'm wrong.

P.S - The haswel chips are rumoured to be the last chips we can change. After that there is a rumour (based on intels own roadmap) that intel will be directly soldering CPUs onto motherboards to improve performance and efficiency.... you'd buy your motherboard with the chip built in

i hear that rumor to paul about the build in cpu to the motherboard. they gonne do that for products like a laptop etc (mainly for cooling ) but there still gonne make em as they are now for desktops. so you can breathe again paul

ya I read about that aswell pauly, that they where planning to do what they do now with atom processors. But thought I also read in a article a while later, it wouldn't be this fast, can't remember to well annymore. Annyway we'll see what the futher brings

Have been checking some benchmarks out and probably maybe would change the I7 to an I5 3570K.
The difference between the 2 for what I would use the pc is so small, its probably not worth the cost.

Also bam, the I5 gets hotter then the I7

Have been looking to some more graphic cards and there benchmarks.
680GTX is verry tempting, but I can buy 2 660gtx for the same price put them in SLI and have better preformance

true but buying SLI to begin with is maxing out your options now. What ever the maximum fps you get with a new sli system is all you will ever get and you can't upgrade without scrapping those cards - unless you went for triple SLI of course

If you get a single card now, then if you suffer performance issues a year down the line you can add another card quite cheaply and have a better SLI system then than you would have now.

Question is - how much extra performance do you get now with SLI over the 680GTX and do you feel it's worth it? Also need to take into account the extra power requirements, extra heat, extra noise and any compatibility issues.

Tough choice.

Ya I know, and thats why I would probably take a 660gtx, and when the cards get cheaper, put a second one in there , considering at this point like you say it doesn't matter that much, cause all you get is to high FPS, that could give problems towards your screen.

So would indeed probably stick with one cheaper card

ah ok - I thought you meant you were going for a 680 or 2 660s... didn't know a single 660 was an option you were considering.

You looking at the 660 or the 660ti? Considered a 670?

Judging by this, there is quite a big jump up from the 660 to the 670 in terms of performance... looks like 670 is quite close to the 680.

was indeed probably going for the 660ti, and yes 1 card sure is an option m8 , everything is an option

Still have to look to the 670gtx benchmarks.

Basicly the prices over here are bid like this:

GTX 660 ti around the 310€
GTX 670 around the 410€
GTX 680 around the 530€

So basicly 100€ between every card
